Fremont County was named for the explorer John C. Fremont. The county seat and largest city is St. Anthony.

Within Fremont County lies a city by the name of Island Park which has the distinction of having "the longest Main Street in America." "Main Street," or U. S. Hwy 20 in Island Park, is 33 miles long from Last Chance to Valley View. Island Park serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and many of its people work in the tourism industry. In its own right, Island Park is a prime recreation area for those who love to camp, hike, fish, hunt, float rivers, view wildlife, snowmobile, cross country ski or simply view majestic scenery. Island Park is also increasingly becoming a choice summer home area and a retirement area for those who don't mind more than a little snow.

You might also want to visit the town of St. Anthony, home of the St. Anthony Sand Dunes and just miles away from Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole WY. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes are at an elevation of 5,000 ft consisting of more than 11,000 acres of clear, shifting, white quartz sand dunes up to 400 feet high that move about eight feet each year. The Dunes are known for their unique beauty and exceptional recreation opportunities.

If you are visiting Idaho for the first time it can take years to explore this mountainous state. We recommend three areas you might find interesting:

Bear Lake County which contains Bear Lake, a large scenic lake often called "Caribbean of the Rockies" for its intense turquoise blue water;

Lemhi County family oriented adventures, from fishing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, camping, to white water rafting, and kayaking;

Adams County with gateways to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and, to the west is the Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area, the deepest river gorge in North America.
