Elmore County was named for the Ida Elmore mines, the area's greatest silver and gold producer of the 1860's. The Oregon Trail crossed the Snake River at Three Island Crossing near Glenns Ferry. A station on the overland stage route, originally named Rattlesnake Station, was moved to the railroad line and became Mountain Home which is the county seat was moved to Mountain Home.

Elmore County features several campgrounds and camping areas along with rivers and lakes for fishing. Many people also visit for the hiking trails as well as the snowmobiling and cross country skiing trails. If you are visiting Idaho for the first time it can take years to explore this mountainous state. We recommend three areas you might find interesting:

Bear Lake County which contains Bear Lake, a large scenic lake often called "Caribbean of the Rockies" for its intense turquoise blue water;

Lemhi County family oriented adventures, from fishing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, camping, to white water rafting, and kayaking;

Adams County with gateways to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and, to the west is the Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area, the deepest river gorge in North America.
